| Packing | Back to Top |
Logisticon does not do packing. You can, however, save huge amounts over what the "international moving companies" charge, by packing everything yourself.
Packing for air shipment - items need to be packed so that they can be handled in a warehouse and handled roughly without damaging the contents. Remember, the shipment will be handled by the same people who handle your airline luggage! Most items can be put in cardboard boxes and should be taped securely. Please put your name and address on each box.
Items purchased new do not usually need packing because they can be shipped in the cartons they came in. If you purchase televisions, appliances, computers, or even furniture, ask that it be left in its original shipping carton. Do not open the cartons. If you wish, you can have such items shipped directly from the vendor, or Logisticon can arrange shipping, to a Logisticon-designated warehouse, and you will not have to handle the items at all.
Used furniture is the most difficult item to pack. You are welcome to get as creative as you can with packing. Frequently, the cost of moving used furniture overseas is more than its value. Many people find it beneficial when moving overseas to do a large air shipment of books, clothes, computers, etc., and then leave the furniture behind. Again, there are no reasonable size or weight restrictions for air shipment, although it often increases your rate if any piece has to stand over 61 inches tall.
If you do not have boxes, you can frequently get them from truck rental companies such as U-Haul.
If you need special help in packing delicate items, you can often go to packing stores listed in the yellow pages. They can frequently put computers, dishes, etc. in cardboard with liquid foam that hardens around the items.
Pickup service - We can pick up your shipment anywhere in the USA and deliver to the airport for shipment overseas. The lowest cost services will bring a truck to your home or other address, and you and the driver will load the truck. For higher rates we can bring extra workers. Liftgate trucks are usually available, again, at a surcharge. You can almost always save by bringing your shipment to the nearest major airport.

Customs clearance and delivery - Logisticon will normally quote you a price to a certain airport overseas. Logisticon can also provide customs clearance and full delivery services at destination as well. We can arrange for delivery to your home or apartment overseas, and even unpacking services at destination. However, many people save money by doing the customs clearance themselves.
Regardless of who does the customs clearance, you are responsible for checking to see if the items you are sending can legally be brought into the country you are sending to, and whether you have to pay taxes on them or not. Most major European and Asian countries do not have major hassles for personal effects but some third-world countries do. Check with the appropriate consulate in the U.S.
Hazardous materials - You cannot put hazardous materials in your shipment. Aerosol cans, flammable perfume, many types of cosmetics, paint, solvents, nail polish remover, photographic chemicals, etc., are absolutely forbidden in your air shipment, even in tiny quantities. You will be penalized severely by the FAA if they catch such items in your shipment. Please call or email Logisticon if you have any questions about what is hazardous.
Logisticon charges at a certain rate per pound, unless the cargo exceeds a certain density. Generally, the heavier the shipment, the lower rate per pound. Logisticon uses the same density formula that all the major international airlines use. This prices shipments by weight, unless the cargo exceeds 166 cubic inches per pound. This is a way of encouraging dense packing. If the volume in cubic inches (length x width x height) divided by 166, comes up to a figure greater than the weight in pounds, then you would be charged for that figure. The calculation applies to the entire shipment, therefore dense pieces can offset less dense ones. Most people shipping personal effects do not have to pay on dimension, as long as they pack reasonably tightly. Items of extreme volume are such things as a table or chair in a box, or televisions and computer monitors.
| Insurance for Air Shipments | Back to Top |
When you ship by air internationally, the airlines generally have a $9.07 per pound liability limit. Collecting on this can be difficult, however. If you want better coverage, Logisticon acts as the broker for major cargo insurers. Through these insurers we can offer full door-to-door coverage for your personal effects shipments. Full details of the coverage are in the insurance policy.
For example, $10,000 coverage for an air shipment from Tulsa, OK to Istanbul, Turkey costs $74.00. We also offer coverage for all types of cargo, including commercial shipments. Commercial cargo generally costs less to insure than personal effects.

There are two basic types of ocean freight for personal shipments: full container load, and less-than-container load (LCL).
| Less-Than-Container-Load | Back to Top |
This type of shipping moves your shipment in an ocean container with other people's shipments. Packing needs to be similar to that required for air shipments, so that the cargo can be handled roughly in a warehouse without damaging the contents. (see air freight section for packing suggestions). The ocean pricing is by volume (per cubic meter/cubic foot), but the trucking within the USA to the consolidation point is usually by weight. Pickup service is available all over the USA to the consolidation warehouses. Customs clearance and delivery is available to almost all overseas points, after arrival. Many people, however, choose to do their own customs clearance at destination.
Regardless of who does the customs clearance, you are responsible for checking to see if the items you are sending can legally be brought into the destination country, and whether you have to pay taxes on them or not. Most major European and Asian countries do not have major hassles for personal effects, but some third-world countries do. Check with the appropriate consulate in the U.S.
Sample Rates - LCL:
| Origin | Destination | Rate per cubic foot |
| Chicago warehouse | London warehouse | $3.50; minimum $150.00 |
| Atlanta warehouse | Sydney warehouse | $6.75; minimum $180.00 |
| Charlotte warehouse | Buenos Aires warehouse | $5.35; minimum $165.00 |
| San Francisco warehouse | Singapore warehouse | $2.85; minimum $150.00 |
Again, trucking from your home to the consolidation warehouse is additional; this will be from .06 to .30/lb., depending on location. The lowest cost services will bring a truck to your home or other address, and you and the driver will load the truck. For higher rates we can bring extra workers. Liftgate trucks are usually available, again, at a surcharge.
There is also a $125.00 documentation fee for every ocean shipment.
| Full Container Load | Back to Top |
This is where you rent the space within an ocean container. Ocean containers are tractor-trailer size units, that are loaded on ships in stacks. For shipment by road, they are loaded onto a chassis, and thus have the same basis height off the ground that a tractor-trailer has. While there are various kinds of ocean containers, the most common (and the lowest cost) are 20 ft and 40 ft standard containers. The interior dimensions of each are approximately as follows:
20 ft standard: 19'5" long x 7'8" wide x 7'9" high
40 ft standard: 39'6" long x 7'8" wide x 7'9" high
You cannot usually load a container at a port. You have to pay a trucking charge to bring the container to where ever you want to load it. The driver picks up an empty container from the port, or from an inland container yard, and drives to your home or other location to load the container. He waits while you load the container, and then returns the loaded container to the port or container yard. Usually, you are permitted two to three hours to load the container. You are charged a fee of about $40.00 per hour after that time, for waiting time. Or, you can pay for an extra trip, and have the drive "drop" (i.e. park) the container, and then come back a few days later and pick it up.
At most overseas locations, the situation is reversed. After customs clearance, you pay a truck to drive the container to where ever you want to unload it.

| Auto Transport | Back to Top |
To most areas of the world, it is convenient to put your car in an ocean container with your goods. However, to some ports, there are roll on/roll off vessels that drive cars on the ships. If there is this kind of ship, then sometimes it is cheaper to ship the car separately. Among the areas that have good roll on/roll off service are the U.K., northern Europe, and some Caribbean points. If you do use roll on/roll off service, the car needs to be dropped off at the port city a day or two before the vessel. You cannot ship anything in the car. It will be driven on and off the ship by dock workers. Depending on where the car is, Logisticon can sometimes arrange inland transport of the car to the port. You must pick up your car at the docks in the destination country. You are responsible for taxes, and making sure that the car you are shipping is indeed permitted to enter that country.
